European summer travel remained resilient in 2026, with German holidaymakers continuing to favor familiar Mediterranean destinations despite economic pressure and geopolitical uncertainty. Preliminary figures from the German Travel Association (DRV), based on tour operator bookings recorded by the end of August, indicated that organized holiday travel generated around 4% more revenue than the previous summer, while the number of travelers increased by 2%. Türkiye, Spain, and Greece remained among the leading choices, supported by demand for beach holidays, cruises, and last-minute bookings. The figures suggest that many people still prioritize taking their main annual holiday, even when household budgets require more careful planning.
The strongest summer results came from destinations within medium-haul reach. Bookings to the eastern Mediterranean, including Greece, Türkiye, Egypt, and Tunisia, recorded an overall revenue increase of 8%, according to the preliminary industry analysis. Greece and Türkiye performed particularly well, while Spain and Portugal also benefited from increased demand across western Mediterranean routes. Cruises recorded growth too, reinforcing their position as an important part of the European holiday market. Last-minute reservations also helped support the season after uncertainty earlier in the year encouraged some customers to delay their decisions.
Long-haul travel presented a more difficult picture, with revenue in the segment falling by 14% compared with the previous summer in the figures cited by the DRV. The association linked some of the weakness to flight cancellations and travel warnings connected with the conflict in the Middle East. The outlook for winter 2026–27 is also mixed: current revenue bookings were reported to be 2% below the previous year, with demand particularly soft for the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Some long-distance destinations, including the Maldives, Thailand, and the Dominican Republic, were showing comparatively stable or improving booking trends. Package holidays may appeal to cautious travelers because they can combine transport and accommodation with operator support if disruption occurs.
There are more positive early signs for summer 2027, with preliminary booking revenue reported to be 8% above the comparable point a year earlier, partly supported by early cruise reservations. However, these figures represent an early snapshot rather than a final forecast, and demand may still change as prices, household confidence, and international conditions develop. For travelers, the trend points to the value of comparing destinations, checking cancellation terms, and deciding whether to book early or wait for a suitable offer. Mediterranean holidays currently appear to have strong momentum among German travelers, while long-haul destinations may see a more uneven recovery as the next travel season approaches.
